The DayZ Sakhal map, and your own position on it.
Sakhal is the volcanic island map: snow, black rock and water on every side. The smallest official terrain, and the one where a wrong guess costs the most, because the cold does not wait.
Point a phone or tablet at the screen you play on. Nothing is installed on the console or the PC, and no server mod is needed.
What the Sakhal map is like to be lost on.
Snow flattens the landmarks
Snow cover removes much of the colour and texture a match relies on. Ridge lines and the shape of the coast carry the recognition here instead.
Water on every side
Sakhal is an island group, so a shoreline is almost always within reach — and shoreline is the single strongest thing you can put in frame.
The volcano is the one unmistakable landmark
Visible from much of the map and recognised on sight.
Knowing the nearest settlement is not a convenience
On Sakhal it is the difference between warming up and freezing. The nearest-places list is the part of the app that matters most here.
Your phone watches the screen, and the map follows you.
One frame roughly every three seconds is cropped to the area you locked, matched against reference views captured by walking the terrain, and turned into a marker on the map — with the nearest town named and the direction you are facing. The full explanation is on the front page.

Straight answers.
Is there a Sakhal map in DayZ?
Not one that shows your position. ZLocator puts the Sakhal map on your phone with your own marker on it.
How big is the Sakhal map?
80 km², the smallest of the three official terrains — but broken into islands, so distances on foot are longer than they look.
Does snow stop the recognition working?
No, but it changes what works. Snow removes texture, so ridge lines, the coast and the volcano do the work. Daylight is still required.
